Alright, prayer would be helpful. The school that Erika and I were signed up with to work at the end of this month fell through. They ended up not having the ablility to take anymore volunteers... completely full. So, we are back to searching for where to go next, and continually hoping that we land in a place that can really use our abilities and hearts.
We have already sent out a ton of e-mails and we have gotten responses trickling back. Most of them have been positive responses and some great ideas have come our way. The next day or so will be spent praying and solidifying our plans. It is almost coming down to what country do we want to go to next...
Other than this bump in our road I am doing quite well. I really like spending time in Cuenca, where we were taking spanish classes. It was a great experience, learned a lot, still having language stuff sink in, and met some great people. Our classes turned out great, and after my one day of feeling completely defeated... I recovered and now am simply trying to memorize words and practice.
Part of what helped encourage me and give me a break from language school was going to Cajas National Park last weekend. We decided to go very much against the opinions of our spanish teacher. She told us scary stories of people getting lost and dying and how the weather can turn at any minute. Really, it wasnt very scary at all and the trails were very well marked... I am glad that she didnt scare us into not going because though it was massive was so incredibly gorgeous and worth going to. We got a group together of people staying in our hostel and traveled up to about 4000 meters... something freaking high in feet. It was a bit cloudy and kind of cold, but it was still very majestic and I felt like I had jumped into a storybook land. I will try to add some pictures soon.

ReplyDeleteBummer that the school thing didnt fall through, but you never know whats next Who knows the reason for why, im believing that in the end all will work out. I bet God has something in store for you that you could have never imagined =)
& i can't wait to see pictures from your adventure to the National Park ! So glad you got to make it there.

stacie, hey from VA! this is harry and wanted to pass on a couple of items, hopefully before you leave for (arrive in) colombia. i didnt know how to contact you until now so i sent your mother a copy of the state department's colombia travel/threat analysis. but more telling i contacted my son who has some experience traveling in central and south america. his unvarnished advice for two young, pretty, white, american, women intending to travel in colombia, for any reason, was "crazy!" he is going to check with some folks in country for more up to date info but his best advice for you and your friend is not to travel there. especially cities and provinces along the coast where drug cartels are most active. but his current knowledge is these guys are pretty much active wherever they want to be, inland, coast, and in between. they pretty much have run of the country. the government is so corrupt that the bad guys dont have much of a leash to keep them in check. my son also said that bolivia was not a good place to travel. it is much like colombia according to him. so, my best advice, is to stay away from both countries. if you two are still intent on traveling to colombia i would advise you to google the " u.s. state department " and toggle their country threat/travel advisories to see which areas are the worst so you can avoid them. debbie and i wish you safe travels and much fun. (i hope you dont view me as an alarmist because i "aint" one. my son and daughter have traveled widely on their own, in all areas of the world, with my encouragement. the one country that was singled out as a place never to return to was colombia.)
